“Folks have nothing to do, and that leaves them open to exploring the furthest corners of YouTube.”
As the world grows more stressful by the day, many people are looking for an escape. They may be finding it through YouTube’s popular lo-fi hip-hop channels, many of which are reporting a significant boost in subscribers and viewers since quarantines and lockdowns began around the world in March.
According to The Verge, the popular channel ChilledCow added 340,000 subscribers in March, nearly double the number it attracted in January. The channel College Music had a 40 percent increase in subscribers over the last month, with views up 46 percent. Nick Stafford, the operator of the channel Nickolaas, also reported a “significant rise in views” in recent moths, pointing to the pandemic as the reason.
“I think this is a fairly obvious correlation though,” he said. “Folks have nothing to do, and that leaves them open to exploring the furthest corners of YouTube. I think lo-fi streams are a great way to kill time, and meet people from around the world too! So it’s a win-win.” With more people working and studying from home, creating a relaxing atmosphere to focus on daily tasks is harder than ever.
Genius previously explored the world of lo-fi hip-hop streaming. It’s become a phenomenon on YouTube, attracting thousands of listeners to 24-hour live streams. The ambient sounds showcased on the channels draw inspiration from the likes of J Dilla and Nujabes:
The uptick in lo-fi channels follows a broader pattern on YouTube which has seen a significant bump in viewership on many videos according to CEO Susan Wojcicki. Lo-fi joins the likes of handwashing videos, mask-making tutorials, and home exercise instructions as a beneficiary in a world trapped at home.
