However the South Florida rapper plans to take his time on his next project.
Over the past year alone, Denzel Curry has dropped three projects: his fourth studio album, ZUU, a mixtape titled 13LOOD 1N + 13LOOD OUT MIXX, and his joint project with Kenny Beats, UNLOCKED. In a new interview with XXL, the South Florida rapper shared his plans to release three more albums before retiring from music.
After explaining that he doesn’t like spending long stretches of time in the studio, the anime fan said he wanted to put his imagination to work as a cartoonist and writer. He’s been working on graphic novel and voiceover work, recently playing a character on the Netflix anime, Carole & Tuesday.
Before leaving the rap game, however, he aims to release three more albums, each of which he plans to keep short.
“Ten tracks is enough. Enough to listen to,” he said. “I just want you to enjoy my music the way you enjoy a film, you know? Like it’s meant to be consumed that way. It’s not meant to be like fast food. It’s meant to be like, damn, what did I just have? A full course meal.”
For his next project, Denzel wants to use “real instruments” and connect with musicians like Terrace Martin, Flying Lotus, Madlib, and André 3000. He also plans to “really sit down and take my time to do it,” as opposed to his most recent work.
Denzel previously said he freestyled the entirety of ZUU and also completed UNLOCKED with Kenny Beats in three days.
Genius recently sat down with Denzel and Kenny for a track-by-track breakdown of the latter project:
