The self-proclaimed Queen of rap Nicki Minaj has maintained a relatively low profile in the first half of this year. After her fourth album Queen peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart (much to her chagrin) last August, Minaj has limited her public and musical appearances in preparation for her next major release.

“Megatron” is Minaj’s first solo track of this year, and its release coinciding with the summer solstice feels perfectly intentional. The song is anchored by a dancehall sample from Jamaican artist Mr. Vegas, and contains all the makings of a summer hit: music that sonically takes listeners to the Caribbean mixed with a catchy chorus, and bars from one of the most decorated rappers of the century, to boot.

Minaj seemingly released the video for “Megatron” at the same time to further push this summer song narrative. The video contains motifs that videos highlighting the season always feature: palm trees and pools, scantily clad bodies gyrating against each other, and intimate time with a lover (in this case, it’s Minaj’s boyfriend, registered sex offender Kenneth “Zoo” Petty).
Lyrically, “Megatron” doesn’t push many new boundaries from what we’ve heard from Minaj, especially in the last few years. Lines about throwing shots back and “keep[ing] it tight for zaddy” make it the song that the lead-up to this summer had been missing. Many mainstream artists in the last few months have been releasing music without the obvious intention of creating summer bangers, which begged the question of if they valued having a “song of the summer” achievement under their belt at all. Sometimes, the tried-and-true formula—as overdone as it may seem—is the key to summertime success that’s always in front of artists’ faces, and Minaj is smart to capitalize on it as she kicks off this next era.
