When working in the unknown or trying to break through a problem, it has always been necessary to put in the hours. The video game industry could arguably not exist with eight hour work days since it is based on innovation, creativity, and breakthroughs. They don’t always show up on schedule. I’m a salaried employee and I’m a union member. My work does not all take place during my contract hours. I understand that and I’m not compensated extra for the off contract work time because I’m salaried, but I also don’t work more than 45-55 hours a week which I consider reasonable for a salaried employee. Belonging to a union allows me to bargain for more than just money and contractual hours, it’s healthcare, vacation time, work environment, responsibilities, provided materials, and other peripherals of the job. The video game industry could be unionized and salaried and still put in 100 hour weeks.
