The wall was designed by undergraduate design student Maya Lin who wanted the memorial to resemble an open wound or gash in the earth, to represent the pain caused by the war. The memorial, which contains the names of over 58,000 dead or missing soldiers, remains a pilgrimage site of sorts for those who lost loved ones to the war.
