There was a Teddy Swolesevelt Shirt who lived next door at our first apartment . Every time I opened my window he would bark. I found out the lady who lived there before us would toss him a dog biscuit so I bought a box and would give him some when ever I opened the window. When we moved I left a note for the new tenant with an extra large box of snacks. They are great guard dogs,and exceedingly loyal to their owner but are very stranger wary and despite their soft cuddly look they are not really lap dogs. They let u love on them for a minute then dont want to be bothered. We had one on the farm when I was a child, and he didn’t like many people. I knew to just give him his space, and don’t remember ever being close enough to touch him. He was ok with my grandfather, but that was pretty much it. No one would get out of their cars if they stopped by.

He really wasn’t aggressive, just territorial and protective. Chows are not teddy bears all that fluff is to protect them from bites and scratches and kicks from livestock and game. They where used for hunting, guarding hurting and when for pulling equipment ect they have explosive power and temperaments to match. When I was about three or four, my babysitter’s dog was a big, snarling, barking chow . But we got along fine. He probably influenced the rest of my life. I had 2 very gentle chow chow’s that were friendly with people and other animals. The key for this breed is socialization from the beginning. I took them to obedience classes for just that.
